After you read, you'll join other students in the class.  If I or another student throws you the ball, catch it and in 5 seconds state any idea, fact or concept from the reading.  Then, toss the ball to another student who has not yet spoken.  That student must add something that has not been mentioned. If, in 5 seconds, you can't remember anything to say, toss the ball to someone else, and sit down.  You'll be out for the round.  We'll continue to play until only one student is left standing.  She/he will win!

Use Learning Logs to make reflections on the reading that you have done.  This is a kinid of journal, similar to what scientists keep when they do experiments.  In the log, record your process for reading the text, list what you went through in learning something new from the text, and pose any questions you may need to have clarified even after reading and doing during reading strategies for comprehension.

Completing your learning log will help you make connections in what you have learned in order to set goals and reflect upon your learning process. When you reflect on your learning, you can think more in-depth and become better at reading and understanding.  After you do your learning log, I'll give you descriptive feedback on what you're doing well and suggestions for improvement.

After Reading Strategies

You'll use the RAFT strategy after reading to personalize what you read about.

RAFT stands for:

R: Role - who you want to become

A: Audience - who will see/read your work

F: Format - what kind of work you will produce

T: Topic - what your work will be about

A RAFT activity will allow you to choose what your assignment will be like based on your interest from the reading.
