During Reading Strategies

During Strategy 1

Alpha Boxes:

Complete an Alphaboxes chart while you read.  This will help you recall important names, places and words used in the text. As you read, try to find characters, places, themes, or vocabulary words for each letter.  You can include more than one word or phrase for each letter, but remember to include what you consider to be the important details for understanding the reading only. Find the most interesting and important words you can for each box. These words and names will help when you are doing after strategies later, so keep adding to your Alpha Boxes over the course of the reading lesson!
Question-Answer Relationships:

  • Question-Answer Relationships is a comprehension strategy to help you make connections, zone in on the correct place to find your answer, and comprehend the text better.  Complete these questions while you read.

  • There are four types of questions you will encounter:

    • "Right There Questions": Literal questions; find the answers in the text.

    • "Think and Search Questions": Literal, complex questions; find and put together answers from several parts of the text to make meaning.

    • "Author and You": Literal but critical-thinking questions; base your answers on the text and on your own experience and knowledge.

    • "On My Own": Personalized, critical-thinking questions; base your answers on your prior experience and language knowledge.

  • Before answering the questions, read a short passage.

  • Use the questions I give you, and decide which type of question they are.

  • Find and use the correct type of information to answer each question (i.e., in the text, from your own experiences, etc.).

Reciprocal Teaching:

Reciprocal teaching can help you improve your understanding as you read.  In groups, you will predict, question your predictions, clarifiy your findings, and summarize as you read.  Each person will have a role and will take turns in each role while reading through selections of the text. There will be a summarizer, questioner, clarifier, and predictor for each selection.  This will all contribute greatly to your comprehension. I will show you how to do this before you do, just like I do with all of our activities and strategies.
